Celebrate them

Celebrate them

If you find it easy to do 30 push-ups, and your workout partner can barely do 10, then celebrate their 10.

And maybe next time they’ll be inspired to aim for 11.

Whatever you do, don’t shame or criticize them for being 20 push-ups short of your example.

After all, they may be better at running than you.

Now, substitute push-ups and running for cleanliness, finances, or whatever you get frustrated about when someone isn’t as competent or as practiced as you are, and the same applies…

If you celebrate what they can do instead of shaming them for what they can’t, they’ll naturally be inspired to do it more.

Principle 3 of Travel Light (page 75) reminds us of how there are no throwaway moments. Every trivialization of someone’s effort will discourage them from even trying. Conversely, every word of encouragement will inspire them to want to do even better.
