Triggering words

Triggering words

Three of the most triggering words in the English language are "but," "always," and "never."

"But" is often associated with backhanded compliments.

And the other two are regularly used to wield accusations or avoid responsibility.

"I think you're a nice person, but..."

"I get upset with you because you always..."

"You're never around when we need you to..."

If we’re honest, few things happen "always" or "never.”

And when used against us, we can quickly become defensive.

I've certainly been on both sides of the always and never accusations before.

And I challenge us to go the rest of the week without using those words in an accusatory way…

Especially not with those whom we profess to love.
